Buffalo:

Aviation Testing Field No. 2 
(added 11/15/18)

 This was one of 4 testing fields for newly manufactured aircraft. Curtis Field no longer exists.


Ft. Niagara

Fort Niagara is the oldest base with a continuous military presence. It was founded in 1726 by the British. The army used it for training during WWI. In 1963, the army left. But there is still a Coast Guard presence today. Fort Niagara is now an U.S. National Historic landmark.

Dansville:

The "Castle on the Hill" was briefly used as a psychiatric hospital during the war. Today the building still exists and is abandoned. Spikes have been placed around the ruins to prevent tresspassing.

Pine Camp
Pine Camp was founded in 1908. It was renamed Camp Drum, and eventually Fort Drum. It is still an active army base.

Brindley Field


Brindley was short lived and closed in 1919. Today a Home Depot occupies the former site.  But there is an 1800s cemetery in the parking lot.

Long Beach:

Mineola:

Hazelhurst Field #1

Hazelhurst Field was renamed Roosevelt Field after the war and saw civilian reuse. During WWII, the field became Mineola NAF. It was closed to aviation in the early 1950s.

Camp Mills
Hospital Layout

Camp Mills was a training camp for pilots, and used as a port of embarkation. It was eventually absorbed by Mitchel Field.

Mitchel Field (Hazelhurst Field #2) 
Mitchel Field saw reuse during WWII. It was a NAS until the early 1960s. Today it is the site of Hofstra University, and the Nassau Coliseum, which was the former home of the NHL New York Islanders.

Montauk:
Montauk NAS
It was built on the northeastern tip of Long Island on a 33 acre site.  It was established in August 1917. Twelve seaplanes and two dirigibles were assigned to the base. In August 1919, the base was closed.

Wantagh:

Yaphank:
Camp Upton
Camp Upton was one of 16 National Army cantonments. During WWII, it saw use as a convalescent hospital for airmen.  Today it is the site of Brookhaven National Laboratory.

Rockaway Naval Air Station 
Rockaway was adjacent to Fort Tilden. It was on a 94 acre site. It opened in October 1917. There were 24 seaplanes and one dirigible that conducted patrols. It was closed in 1931 and the land became a park.

Otisville:

Plattsburgh:
Plattsburgh Barracks (General Hospital #30)
Even though it is circa 1932, many of these building were around during WWI.

The Plattsburgh Barracks also saw use during WWII. In the 1950s, the Air Force took over the property and incorporated it into the massive Plattsburgh Air Force Base. PAFB ended up on the 1993 base closure list. 

Rochester: 
Baker's Field
This area was east of the current Rochester International Airport. Due to being in a flood plain, the airport was closed. 

Schenectady:
Schenectady Interior Storage Depot
Springfield:
Wartervliet Arsenal
Watervliet Arsenal was founded in 1813. It is still active today.

Syracuse:
Camp Syracuse

Camp Syracuse was located at the Onondaga County Fairgrounds. It closed in 1919.
